Australia's Monthly History- October
17th October 1967 Federal Government send Centurion Tanks to Vietnam.
This important date is not listed for October.
The Federal Government at that time made a unexpected announcement that Centurion Tanks would form part of Australia's increased commitment to the war in South Vietnam which was announced on 17th October1967.
Iwas a vehicle mechanic in the 1st Independent Armoured Squadron Workshop RAEME which was raised in October 1967 at Puckapunyal, Victoria in support of the first Centurion Battle Tanks to move to South Vietnam.
The rest is History,
We kept them on track.

G/Morning Des, As Nick Weir said in a previous post, one wonders sometimes if Australia had any involvement in SVN with the lack of "important" headings there is each month about that conflict.

Re: Australia's Monthly History- October
Hi Des,
You may care to mention 17 Oct to the AWM (webmaster@awm.gov.au). I'll pass on to the RAAC Corps Historian for submission as well. (Major Baines had a productive meeting at the AWM yesterday...an initiative of our Head of Corps to present a Corps position with respect to the portrayal of RAAC matters.)
If you do email the AWM, you might mention the entry for 3 Oct. It was previously just "Opening of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial". I'd previously made the point to them that it was unveiled during the Dedication Ceremony, not 'opened' like a building. They've now included Dedication in the title, but still refer to it as having been opened, in the text. (I find use of the term 'opened' to be disrespectful in the context.)
Regards, Bruce
