Op PINNAROO

Post  BruceCameron on Mon Oct 12, 2009 7:53 pm

On 11 March 69, special equipment troop were down in the Light Green or thereabouts helping clear mines prior to the start of Op PINNAROO.

About 1230hrs, a plane failed to pull out of a straffing run and flew straight into the Long Hais. Can anyone help as to whether or not it was a jet aircraft? The guys on the ARV saw the incident, so I'm hoping that others might have some recollection as to what type of plane it was.

Many thanks, Bruce

You will note the time the F104 went out of service, so you can scratch that one. afro

The Lockheed F-104 Starfighter was an American single-engined, high-performance, supersonic interceptor aircraft that served with the United States Air Force (USAF) from 1958 until 1967

The F-4 Phantom II remain's in front line service with seven countries, and in use as an unmanned target in the U.S. Air Force. It remained in use by the U.S. in the reconnaissance and Wild Weasel [Wild Weasel is a nickname for an aircraft of the United States Air Force specially equipped with radar seeking missiles used to remove radars and SAM installations of enemy air defence systems] roles in the 1991 Gulf War, finally leaving service in 1996.
